Mama Duck Left Two Babies Behind!
Now what? We have two teenage ducks left, and if you look closely, you’ll see that the wings are just starting to come out. But these wings cannot fly a duck. Look at the coloration on the head, though! The baby fuzz is gone, and feathers are coming in.
These two little guys are still here, and Mama Duck left three days ago! I don’t think she’s coming back. So we called the International Bird Rescue in San Pedro, California. “What do we do?”
“Stop feeding them,” the very nice woman on the phone said. (She called me back!) “If they haven’t left by Monday, call us. We’ll come get them.”
That’s wonderful because the ducks race up to beg at our feet whenever we venture outside. They peep when they see us in the house and do their darndest to look as cute as possible. They look us right in the eye, I swear!
“Are you really not going to feed us?” It’s unnerving. I’ve been leaving the house so I wouldn’t face the guilt.
We love animals. Ducks are especially calming. I think it’s that gliding thing they do on the water’s surface. Except when they’re hungry, they’re pretty mellow creatures. If we could train them to poop in the dirt instead of in the pool, we might keep them for pets. However, that’s a fool's errand. Besides, Mama Duck might have left them for a reason. Maybe they are being punished. Who knows?
In another episode, we’ll tell you what happened to the last two duckies. Stay tuned. The Duck saga continues, with a hopefully happy conclusion next week.
